On Lokmanya Tilak’s death anniversery, it’s time to re-examine his legacy

Keshav Gangadhar Tilak who was well known by the name of Bal Gangadhar Tilak (Lokmanya Tilak) died on the exact date of today 100 years ago. This 100th death anniversary of our freedom fighter, we should know something about him.


One of the strongest advocates of “Swaraj”, & had a best political career during the British Rule he was called “The father of Indian Unrest” by British author Valentine Chirol.

When Lord Curzon, the Viceroy of India applied a strategy to demolish nationalist movement Tilak boycott the movement by encouraging Swadeshi Movement that boycott foreign goods.

In 1908, when Prafulla Chaki and Khudiram Bose threw a bomb on a carriage to kill the Chief Presidency Magistrate Douglas Kingsford of Calcutta fame, but accidently they killed two women. Chaki killed himself before anybody can caught him but Bose got arrested and hanged. Tilak defended the revolutionaries and called for immediate Swaraj or self-rule in his book Kesari. That time government charged him & a special jury convicted him where six years jail was sentenced to be served in Mandalay.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak launched the Indian Home Rule League with the rousing slogan “Swarajya is my birthright and I will have it” after he was released.

He published The Arctic Home in the Vedas that represents the origin of Aryans and Srimad Bhagvat Gita Rahasya (1915).

One of the best freedom fighter & influencer, Bal Gangadhar Tilak died on 1 August, 1920.
